I invite you to attend Mecum’s Original Spring Classic Auction in Indianapolis.

The Annual Mecum’s Original Spring Classic Auction in Indianapolis is one of the “must attend” collectible car auctions in the country. This year’s event held May 13 – 17, featured over 1,000 cars and 300 neon signs exhibited in five connected buildings at the Indiana State Fairgrounds that allowed visitors to peruse the offerings without worrying about the weather.

Shelby cars garnered the top three sales spots in the following order:
1. a 1966 Cobra 427 S/C Roadster CSX 3034 at $1,165,000
2. a 1966 Cobra 427 Competition Roadster CSX 3020 at $1,000,000
3. a 1967 GT500 428 Dual-Quad Convertible at $825,000.
In fourth place was the 1964 Cooper Monaco King Cobra CM 6/64 driven by Parnelli Jones to win the L.A. Times Grand Prix at $600,000.
Rounding out the top five was a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle 454 LS6 numbers matching convertible at $375.000.

The 1938 Blue Crown Spark Plug Indianapolis racecar built by innovator Joe Lencki earned the sixth sales position at $375,000.
Chevrolet-built autos collected the next three spots in the following order:
7. a 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Z16 Hardtop 396 prototype at $335,000
8. a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle COPO 427 numbers matching hardtop at $310,000
9. the 1955 Chevrolet Corvette Zora Duntov Test Mule EX-87 at $310,000.
Closing out the “Top Ten” sales results was a 1970 Plymouth Hemi 4-Speed Superbird multiple award winner at $300,000.

The merchandise area had a number of vendors of automotive artwork and literature. I especially liked David Chapple’s bold colorful paintings, a couple of which featured Auburn and Duesenberg autos. If you are looking for sales brochures for your muscle car, I recommend you stop and check out literature vendors like PJ’s Autolit. These folks are a great resource for advertisements, dealer literature, and color chip charts.

The display for the neon sign auction consumed most of the south wall of the Toyota Blue Ribbon Pavilion. The signs included ones featuring petroleum companies, auto companies, accessories, and restaurants. These colorful signs ranged in years from the 1920’s through the 1960’s. These advertising icons also offered a great nostalgic trip back in time.

The five-day auction boasted total gross sales (including buyer's premium) approaching $40 million. Mecum reported a 70% sold rate for the Indy auction. If you’re interested in seeing the best offerings in muscle cars, I suggest that you reserve a space on your calendar for the next Mecum Spring auction in Indianapolis.
